Fred Marang

SALT Operator

Fred was born and bred near Cape Town. He matriculated in Bellville and went on to become a Television Fault finder. In 1978 he joined the the SAAO as the first night assistant on the 1.9M telescope in Sutherland. He also spent time on the 0.5M and 0.75M telescopes as service observer. In 2005 he became one of the SALT Operators.

After living on the Sutherland site for 22 years he moved back to Kraaifontein where he is currently living with his wife, a son and two daughters. Hobbies include making and listening to music, and watching sport.
