Grant Southey

SALT Electronics Technician

Grant was born in Durban, and grew up in Northern Natal (Dundee), where he completed his studies and Matriculated from Sarel Cilliers Technical High School with electronics as one of his subjects.

After school he moved to Newcastle and completed an apprenticeship with Iscor, qualified as an Instrument Mechanician, and stayed employed for a further year at the Blast Furnace. During restructuring, he was retrenched and found work at Sappi Saiccor on the Natal South Coast. He only worked there for a year before joining ABB Automation as a service engineer, where he was based at Mondi Merebank, servicing Quality Control Systems . After five years the ABB equipment was replaced, so he joined Metso Automation and worked for another five years as a QCS Service Engineer also on site at Merebank.

After ten years of being on the same site (Mondi Merebank) it was time for a change and so he and his family made the big move to Sutherland where the plan was to start and run a B&B. A few months after moving to Sutherland, and having setup the B&B, it was neccessary for him to go back to work. At the same time a vacancy for an Electronics Technician became available at SALT.
