Mike is a native Capetonian, having been born in the city in 1958. After completing his school years at the South African College School, he trained as a pilot with the South African Air Force, flying many different aircraft types including jets, helicopters and transport aircraft.
In 1984 he trained as an experimental test pilot with the National Test Pilot School of Mojave, California, and was appointed as a test pilot with Denel Aviation. His flight testing duties were primarily focussed on the development testing of the Rooivalk Attack Helicopter and its associated test platforms, but also included flight testing on light jet aircraft.
During the 1990's he became responsible for the management of all test activities on the Rooivalk Program and in 1996 was appointed as the Chief of Denel Aviation's Flight Test Centre and a member of the Military Aircraft Division's Management Committee.
The attraction of Cape Town became too strong to ignore and he moved back to the city in late 1999 when he joined the SALT Project Team.
