SALT - Southern African Large Telescope

SALT Science Working Group

The SALT Science Working Group (SSWG) consists of representatives from all of the SALT partner institutions and is chaired by the SALT Project Scientist. Its main function to date has been to determine the top-level user requirements for SALT, known as the SALT Observatory Science Requirements (pdf - 122K). This document was ratified by the SALT Board in May 2000 and forms the basis of the SALT System Specification, a technical document that is the responsibility of the SALT Systems Engineer and the SALT Project Team.

The SSWG is concerned with all of the scientific aspects of the SALT project, and particularly with the choice of instrumentation for the telescope, which is currently the major activity.

The SSWG meets at least twice a year, coinciding with SALT Board meetings. More frequent business is conducted through email.
