SALT - Southern African Large Telescope

SALT Science Simulation

SALT science simulators are at varying stages of development. In preparing a technical assesment of your case during the phase I proposal process, a feasibility study is required for your proposed observations. The following resources should be employed by the PI to assess the feasibility of their experiment and report provided within the proposal application.

  • SALTICAM. A Java-based tool, used as a standalone application, is now available from the Observation Planning Tools page. PIs are also requested to use the information available on the SALTICAM Specifications page.
  • RSS. A Java tool is available for experiment designing and feasilbility calculations. It allows one to simulate point source fluxes and spectra and propagate them through the telescope and instrument optics. It provides spectral resolutions and wavelength ranges for all instrument configurations and outputs a signal-to-noise estimate as a function of spectral resolution element. The simulation software can be downloaded from the Observation Planning Tools page.
