Recent News on Commissioning

An excellent quality (subarcsec) image of an Open Cluster taken with SALT on 12 Aprl 2011 demonstrating good image quality over the ~10 arcmin field of view.

Activities at SALT over the last few months have been quite frenetic with the re-installation of the two first-light instuments, SALTICAM (in March) and RSS (in April).

While the focus has been on the full commissioning of RSS, various telescope subsystems have also beenput through their paces, notably:

  • the telescope's optics: we have confirmed that the telescope now delivers good images following the SAC mounting modification completed in 2010.
  • pointing and tracking
  • guiding and focussing: whle a little is work is still required to make the auto-guiding more effcient, it is basically now working as expected.
  • installation of the atmospheric dispersion compensator (ADC) and light baffles
  • commissioning of the calibration system
